Spring Wardrobe Refresh: Getting Your Clothes Ready for the Season
The start of a new season is the right time to assess, clean, and prepare your wardrobe. Here is how to do it properly.
The shift to spring is a natural moment to take stock of what is in your wardrobe: what made it through the winter well, what needs attention, and what is ready to come back into rotation after months in storage. Done right, this seasonal refresh extends the life of your clothes and starts the season with a wardrobe that is actually ready to wear.
Start With an Inspection
Before anything else, go through what has been in storage and assess each piece in good light. Look for:
- Staining that developed during storage, particularly yellowing on white and light-colored fabrics
- Any musty or off odor that indicates moisture exposure
- Moth damage, which appears as small holes or thin patches in wool and cashmere
- Stretched seams, loose buttons, or other construction issues that worsened over winter
- Leather and suede that has dried out and may be showing cracking or stiffness
Anything with issues should go to the cleaner or tailor before it goes into your rotation. Wearing a damaged garment accelerates that damage.
Reassess What You Actually Wear
Storage rotation is a natural opportunity to edit. If something has been in storage for two seasons without being worn, it is worth reconsidering whether it earns a place in the wardrobe. Pieces that are kept but never worn still take up space, still need cleaning and storage care, and tend to accumulate in ways that make the wardrobe as a whole harder to use.
If you are setting something aside, have it cleaned before it goes. Even if it is going to a consignment shop or a donation, clean garments fare better in every context.
What to Bring In Before the Season Starts
Spring and summer pieces that have been in storage since last year benefit from a clean before they come back into regular use. Lightweight wool trousers, linen suits, silk dresses, and any fine garment that was stored without cleaning should be refreshed before the season starts rather than after the first wearing.
This is also the time to bring in any winter pieces that need cleaning before going away for the season. Wool coats, heavy sweaters, and tailored outerwear should all be cleaned before storage.
The Case for Starting Fresh
There is something to the idea of beginning a new season with everything in order. Clothes that fit well and are properly maintained contribute to how you feel when you wear them. A wardrobe that has been attended to, cleaned, repaired, and organized is easier to use and more satisfying than one that has accumulated neglect over time.
