The most common way fine garments deteriorate is through improper storage. Fur and wool stored in warm spaces invite moths and oxidation. Leather packed without adequate air circulation develops mold. Even properly cleaned garments stored in the wrong environment will suffer over a season.
We offer two storage options for clients who want their most valuable seasonal pieces protected between use.
Cold storage maintains a climate-controlled environment appropriate for fur coats, fine wools, and sensitive materials that degrade in warm storage. Regular storage is appropriate for garments that benefit from professional, controlled conditions without the need for refrigeration.
Garments are cleaned before storage and inspected upon retrieval. They are returned to you in ready-to-wear condition.

What is the difference between cold storage and regular garment storage?
Cold storage keeps garments in a climate-controlled environment appropriate for fur coats, fine wools, and materials that degrade in warm conditions, while regular storage provides professional, controlled conditions for pieces that do not require refrigeration. At Sweetwater's Cleaners, cold storage is $115 and regular storage is $55 per garment. Both keep your seasonal pieces protected between wearings.
Do garments need to be cleaned before storage?
Yes. Every garment is cleaned before it goes into storage. Soil, body oils, and invisible stains oxidize over months and become far harder to remove, and they also attract moths. Storing a garment clean is the single most important step in protecting it over a season.
How long can I store my garments?
Seasonal storage typically runs the length of an off-season, though there is no fixed limit. Garments are inspected upon retrieval and returned in ready-to-wear condition. Contact our Wainscott or Hampton Bays location to arrange retrieval.
What kinds of garments benefit most from professional storage?
Fur, fine wool coats, cashmere, leather, and any valuable seasonal piece benefits from professional storage. These materials are the most vulnerable to moths, oxidation, and mold when stored improperly at home. Cold storage is recommended for fur and sensitive materials.
