When to Clean Your Wedding Dress (And Why You Shouldn't Wait)
The stains you cannot see after your wedding are often the ones that cause permanent damage. Here is why timing is everything when it comes to bridal gown care.
Most brides think about wedding dress cleaning after the honeymoon, when the gown is already hanging in a closet for two or three months. By then, some of the damage has already been done.
The Stains You Cannot See
Champagne, cake frosting, white wine, and body perspiration are all sugar-based or protein-based substances. When they dry, they become nearly invisible on white or ivory fabric. But invisible does not mean gone. These substances oxidize over time, and as they do, they turn yellow or brown in a way that is very difficult, and sometimes impossible, to reverse.
A gown that looks clean when you take it off may have staining set into the fabric weeks or months later. The more time passes, the harder those stains are to address.
The Right Window
Bring your gown in within four to eight weeks of your wedding. The sooner, the better. This gives your cleaner the best chance at removing staining that has not yet had time to oxidize and bond deeply with the fibers.
If your wedding is still months away and you have a gown that was worn for a fitting or alterations, that is also a good time to inspect it for any marks from handling.
Cleaning vs. Preservation
There are two levels of care for a wedding gown after your wedding. Cleaning and pressing restores the gown to wearable condition, ideal if you plan to wear it again or simply want it looked after properly. Cleaning, pressing, and preservation takes things further: after cleaning, the gown is wrapped in acid-free tissue, placed in an archival box, and sealed in a way that protects against yellowing and fabric degradation for decades.
At Sweetwater's, bridal cleaning and pressing starts at $350. Preservation is $500. Both services include a full inspection of the gown before and after, and a conversation about anything we find.
What to Tell Your Cleaner
When you bring in your gown, share as much as you remember: what you ate and drank, where you danced, whether you walked outside on grass or pavement, whether anyone spilled anything on you. Even a vague memory helps the cleaning team know where to focus their attention.
What Happens at Sweetwater's
Every gown that comes through our Wainscott location is inspected by hand before cleaning. We identify areas of concern, discuss the process with the customer, and handle the entire gown, including delicate fabrics like silk, satin, organza, and lace, with the attention each material requires. Nothing goes near a machine press. Every inch of a wedding gown is finished by hand.
Your gown is worth that level of care. Do not wait.
