Leather and Suede Care: What You Need to Know
Leather and suede respond differently to almost everything: water, heat, cleaning products, and storage. Here is what the labels do not tell you.
Leather and suede are among the most misunderstood materials in a wardrobe. People treat them too harshly, or treat them too carefully and then neglect them, or apply products that do more harm than good. The result is jackets and bags that age badly when they should age beautifully.
Leather and Suede Are Not the Same
Both materials come from animal hide, but the surface is entirely different. Full-grain and top-grain leather has a smooth, finished surface that is relatively moisture-resistant and durable. Suede is made from the underside of the hide, which creates a soft nap that is far more vulnerable to water, oil, and abrasion.
What works for smooth leather can ruin suede. Water that beads off a finished leather jacket will leave a stain on suede. Products that condition smooth leather can darken suede permanently. They need to be treated as separate materials.
What Damages Leather
The two primary enemies of leather are dryness and moisture, which sounds contradictory but is not. Leather that is too dry cracks. Leather that is too wet warps, develops mold, and can lose its finish. The goal is to maintain the right level of moisture and suppleness without oversaturating the material.
Heat is also a significant threat. Leaving a leather jacket in a hot car, near a radiator, or in direct sunlight for extended periods will dry out and crack the surface faster than years of normal wear.
What Damages Suede
Water is the primary threat to suede. A rain shower can leave visible water marks on suede that are difficult to remove after the fact. A protective spray applied before wearing helps, but it is not a guarantee.
Oil and grease are essentially permanent on suede without professional treatment. If you get oil on suede, do not rub it. Blot it gently and bring the piece in as soon as possible. The faster the response, the better the outcome.
When to Go Professional
Leather and suede cleaning is not a DIY project for anything you care about. The wrong product, wrong application, or wrong technique can strip finish, change color, damage the nap, or cause irreversible shrinkage.
Professional leather and suede care is particularly important for:
- Any piece with set-in staining from oil, food, or rain
- Full reconditioning at the end of each season
- Any piece that has dried out and begun to show cracking
- Color restoration on faded or worn areas
At Sweetwater's, leather jacket cleaning starts at $115. Leather coats start at $135. We also handle handbags, wallets, and other leather accessories. Each piece is evaluated individually before treatment.
Storage
Store leather and suede garments in breathable fabric bags, not plastic. Hang leather jackets on padded hangers to maintain shoulder shape. For long-term storage, conditioning the leather before it goes away will protect it during the months it is not in use.
